Team World dominated the Laver Cup in San Francisco, giving Andre Agassi his first title as captain with a 15-9 win over Team Europe at the Chase Center. Having taken over from John McEnroe, Agassi led Team World to its third championship in four years before a star-studded crowd that included Stephen Curry and Roger Federer. After sweeping Saturday to build a 9-3 lead, Team World weathered a European comeback attempt on Sunday, when matches were worth three points each. Carlos Alcaraz kept Team Europe's hopes alive with an impressive singles performance against Francisco Cerúndolo, but it wasn't enough to overcome the deficit.
Taylor Fritz proved the difference-maker. The California native stunned world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 on Saturday for his first win over the Spaniard, then clinched the title Sunday with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over No. 3 Alexander Zverev. His aggressive baseline play and fearless approach earned five critical points, dismantling two of Europe’s biggest stars. Playing in front of his home-state crowd, Fritz credited the team environment and seeing "a legend like Andre jumping out of his seat cheering" as motivation for his extraordinary weekend.
