The men's draw was rocked by several major upsets through the opening rounds as favorites struggled to navigate tricky conditions in the California desert. Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca continued his meteoric rise by dominating 23rd seed Tommy Paul 6-2, 6-3 to reach his first Masters 1000 fourth round, setting up a blockbuster clash with second seed Jannik Sinner. California native Learner Tien delighted the home crowd by upsetting eighth seed Ben Shelton 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 in an all-American, all-lefty battle, improving to 2-0 in their head-to-head. Fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti crashed out to Marton Fucsovics 7-5, 6-1 in a stunning defeat on his return from injury, while Cameron Norrie provided another shock by toppling sixth seed Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4.
Despite the chaos, the tournament's biggest names marched forward with authority. World number one Carlos Alcaraz cruised past Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-3 to maintain his perfect 2026 record, while Sinner needed just 64 minutes to dispatch qualifier Dalibor Svrcina 6-1, 6-1 before recovering from a shaky start to beat Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 6-2. Fourth seed Alexander Zverev delivered one of his best performances of the season in a 71-minute demolition of Matteo Berrettini and later reached 100 Masters 1000 wins this decade by outlasting Brandon Nakashima 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-4. Defending champion Jack Draper advanced to face Novak Djokovic after defeating Francisco Cerundolo 6-1, 7-5 despite still recovering from his lengthy arm injury layoff.

Iga Swiatek extended her dominance at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 victory over Maria Sakkari in a rematch of their 2022 and 2024 finals. The second seed has never lost to Sakkari in the California desert and has never dropped more than five games in their three meetings at the venue, despite holding a closer 5-4 overall head-to-head. Swiatek improved to 24-3 lifetime at Indian Wells after making tactical adjustments following her recent Doha quarterfinal loss to the Greek, stating she "really needed to analyze the Doha match" and executed her game plan flawlessly from start to finish in the shadowy late-afternoon conditions on Stadium 1.
Jessica Pegula continued her quest for a breakthrough Indian Wells result by rallying from a set down to defeat former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and reach the round of 16. The fifth seed has never advanced past the quarterfinals in seven previous appearances at the tournament, with her best result coming five years ago, and she's determined to change that narrative. Pegula will face 12th seed Belinda Bencic next, against whom she holds a career 0-4 record and has never won a set, though the American expressed confidence that she's "become a much better player over the last six months." Top seed Aryna Sabalenka and fourth seed Coco Gauff also advanced safely, while defending champion Mirra Andreeva delivered a flawless 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Solana Sierra.
